Ferrante & Teicher
“Tonight” from West Side Story
Music by Leonard Bernstein
Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
from Tonight and Other FavoritesThis reached number eight on the Billboard pop charts. Just sit with that for a bit.
Jen and I were revising the Fellowship! score this summer, and Arwen’s bombastic 80s love theme was labeled “in the style of Ferrante & Teicher.” Composer Allen Simpson introduced us to this bit of awesome so we could flesh out the piano part. Just a little.
life:
The Broadway production of West Side Story opened to largely ecstatic reviews 55 years ago this week, on September 26, 1957. The movie version, which went on to win 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, opened four years later, in 1961, and has been rightfully celebrated ever since as one of the most dynamic, appealing and imaginative American pop-culture creations of the 20th century.
Here, LIFE.com presents a series of photos by Gjon Mili made on the set of West Side Story. Some of these pictures ran in LIFE, while many more were not published in the magazine: but what comes across in every frame is the energy and the dedication of the men and women who were bringing a story that had already conquered Broadway to the big screen. Here, quite literally, is a classic in the making.
Have you been lying awake at night, staring at the ceiling, fighting a cold sweat just wondering, “What would ‘Send in the Clowns’ sound like rendered on an organ?”
Ahhh this is gorgeous!! Even though it sounds much less…depressing. And kind of like a live orchestra playing music box music. STILL. Gorgeous.

Jamie Cullum - Not While I’m Around (from Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd)
Ughhhhhhhhh I LOVE JAMIE CULLUM SO MUCH. I wish he’d do covers of everything and then write more great songs because he is just that awesome.
I am not kidding when I say I’ve probably listened to all of his albums on repeat over 100 times. They got me through some pretty rough days.

399 playsSo I’ve started playing Pokemon Ruby (ahahahaha THERE GOES MY TIME) and I was researching the Pokemon I could find on Route 102.
One of them is called “Ralts” (picture uploaded for visual reference):

And I shit you not, the anime episode where this Pokemon is featured is titled:
“Do I Hear a Ralts?”
Pokemon x Sondheim crossovers, WHAT IS THIS
“Fucking Sondheim. 3 songs?!?”—
Jen Lin’s reaction to the combination song of “The Rain on the Roof” / “Ah, Paris!” / “Broadway Baby.” Yep. 3 songs. So good.
Yup. That was me in the middle of the theater during Follies.
Sondheim is so genius sometimes it just makes me angry.
“Johanna (Quartet)” from the new cast recording of Sweeney Todd.
